A useful fragrance wardrobe is not measured by the number of bottles. It is a collection in which every scent has a reason to be there. Three distinct roles can be more satisfying than many fragrances that compete for the same occasion.

Perfume is a personal gift, which is exactly why it can be difficult to choose. The safest starting point is evidence of the recipient's taste—not a fragrance described as universally loved.

A perfume description can read like a shopping list: bergamot, rose, cedar and musk. These notes describe the intended smell. They are not necessarily a complete ingredient list, and they do not tell you exactly how a fragrance will smell on you.

A decant is most useful when you treat it as a small wear trial. The goal is not to empty it quickly, but to answer the questions a shop tester cannot: do you enjoy the fragrance after several hours, and does it fit your routine?

Your signature scent should suit your actual life, not just a memorable first spray. Start by describing what you already enjoy: crisp and clean, soft and floral, warm and sweet, or dry and woody. You do not need perfume vocabulary to make a useful shortlist.
