How to Test a Perfume Decant Over Several Wears

A decant is most useful when you treat it as a small wear trial. The goal is not to empty it quickly, but to answer the questions a shop tester cannot: do you enjoy the fragrance after several hours, and does it fit your routine?

Give each fragrance its own day

Avoid comparing several heavily sprayed fragrances on the same morning. It becomes difficult to tell which scent you are noticing. Start with one, note where and how much you applied, and keep the next trial broadly comparable.

Write down the dry-down

Check the opening, the middle of your day and the evening. Use your own descriptions: too sugary, pleasantly clean, richer than expected, or comfortable throughout. Record the weather and setting too. One test during an outdoor lunch cannot fairly represent every situation.

Buy on repeat enjoyment

Repeat your favourite before moving to a larger size. Ask whether you would choose it when you are not actively evaluating it. Decants are transferred into smaller atomisers; they are not sealed retail bottles. Check the exact fragrance name and concentration on the listing before comparing versions.
